Milan, Fuorisalone 2009: Barbie goes Design with Kartell
Barbie opens the doors of her new “Dream House”
On 21 April, the doors finally opened to the “Barbie Dream House” as redesigned in a glamorous and contemporary fashion by Kartell. The exclusive event drew more than a thousand people, who brought the expanded interior space and outside area to full occupancy, and drank a toast to the partnership and 50th anniversary of the most famous plastic doll in the world. The liaison between the two brands has transformed the windows of the single-brand Kartell shop into six “dream house” settings. Every window has reproduced the typical layout of the Barbie boxes. The interior of the Kartell flagship on via Turati in Milan has been painted pink, presenting an entire collection of products in shades of pink, including a series of ad hoc coloured pieces for the event, in addition to the “Barbie style” Louis Ghost and Lou Lou Ghost chairs. Furthermore, Kartell debuted the “toy size” pieces that Barbie selected to furnish her house as a super sneak preview: the Louis Ghost chair, the Bourgie lamp and TopTop side table, all in plastic of course. The mini-series was presented inside Barbie-inspired boxes from the collection for the 50th anniversary, and will be sold at a large charity auction to benefit Save the Children, which Barbie will hold within the year. Even the Kartell plastic ballet flats designed by .normaluisa were in pink! Indeed a limited run of 60 pairs of solid pink and bi-colour pink and white shoes were produced for the occasion, which will be sold exclusively at the flagship on via Turati.
